Experiential Learning and Police Academy Training
Police academy training is automatically awarded 3 lower-division elective CRJS credits to degree-seeking students at Old Dominion University.
Training beyond basic police academy: if you believe you have training that parallels competencies taught in any of Old Dominion's CRJS courses, submit it for evaluation by sending a course description and/or syllabus along with proof of completion. Keep in mind that training needs to be at least 35 hours in duration in order to be evaluated, and it must be equivalent to a course taught at Old Dominion University. Please use our training evaluation form on our website at the address below.
Training that allows students to have a better understanding of the historical development and contemporary dimensions of police role and function, forces contribute to and effects of the execution of critical policing issues (main strategies, discretion, use of force, corruption, accountability, police-community relations, and community policing), and how and to what extent the exercise of these activities is subject to control by society, may be reviewed for CRJS elective credits at 300-400 level. For example, academic training subjects such as administration of justice, concepts and principles of community policing, and cultural awareness are appropriate while technical skills training on firearms, defensive tactics, and traffic law enforcement are not.
Departmental exams are available for the following required 200-level CRJS courses:
CRJS 215S: Introduction to Criminology
CRJS 222: The Criminal Justice System
CRJS 262: Law and the Criminal Justice System
Portfolio development is an option for students who have at least 5 years of major-related work experience. A portfolio would be appropriate for upper-division (300-400 level) courses. For more information about portfolios, please visit the portfolio link.
