Family Educational Rights Protection Act (FERPA)
One of the most significant changes you will experience in sending your son or daughter to college is the difference in your access rights for educational records. The University is subject to a federal law called the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA protects the privacy of your student's educational record by limiting access to information classified as "non-directory". This information, including grades, is released by the University only upon written permission of your student, upon receipt of a court order or under other circumstances permitted by law. If you are interested in learning your student's grades we recommend that you talk with them often, offer your support and ask how they are doing in their classes.
